In Conversation:
Dior's Perceptions of Femininity
An evening with Dr. Ilya Parkins

May 16

Dr. Ilya Parkins believes that people need to take fashion seriously as an incredibly influencial cultural force. Parkins says that "fashion is strongly connected to femininity, and to trivialize it is, in a sense, to trivialize women."

"My work makes a case for the incredibly important position of fashion in culture. In the period I mainly study-the early 20th century-fashion was seen and written about by commentators as something that embodied the spirit of the modern. Its importance was understood. Fashion crystallized the era people were living in, and when we fail to look at that we have an impoverished analysis."

At this special In Conversation event, Dr. Parkins will discuss her research into the writings of Christian Dior himself, and how the way the designer narrated his own life and his perceptions of women and femininity had a profound influence on the world. Dior's style, words, clothes and actions were informed not only by abstract ideas about femininity, but also by his respected business colleagues and personal companions as well as the women he was creating fashion for.
