Indigenous Studies

Tipis, Tales and Teachings: An Introduction to the Blackfoot Peoples
(Social Studies)
You are invited to travel back in time to explore the traditional life of the Blackfoot people. Learn about useful plants and animals, daily camp life and living in tipis. We will see how hides were tanned for clothing, hear stories told through oral tradition and explore authentic First Nations artifacts. Students will create their own tipi to take back to school.

Fine Arts

My First Museum Visit
(Fine Arts, Language Arts, Social Studies)
Introduce your students to the fascinating world of Glenbow. Inquisitive young minds will learn from the exhibitions through exploration and artifact handling. They will discover the meaning of the words museum, gallery, exhibit and artifact and uncover the stories that can be told by what they see and feel. The program includes a mini-museum in a box to take back to your school for students to sculpt an artifact and create a work of art.

Explore the Basics: Learning to See, Express and Create
(Fine Arts, Language Arts)
We live in a visual culture! Learn how to slow down, look deeply and read the vocabulary of art - line, shape and colour - in one of Glenbow's many art galleries. Using all of their senses, students will collaborate in small groups to create a floor collage using materials that support their exploration and understanding of these concepts. The group collages are disassembled at the end of the program.

Discovery Adventure
(Fine Arts, Language Arts, Social Studies)
Looking for a more flexible tour experience? Glenbow's Discovery Adventure tour could be for you! The Discovery Adventure is a general tour of Glenbow. A trained educator will lead you through the museum, discuss various galleries and allow your students time to encounter several of the exhibitions. In order to take home their Glenbow experience, each student is given a sketchbook to gather information, draw and further investigate his or her interests in the museum!

(Social Studies)
Who were the individuals that helped build our first communities? Whose ideas led to the creation of our unique city? Based in the Mavericks gallery, this program allows students to explore with artifact handling and photographs and discover the pioneering men and women who first settled the West and began building our great city ... Calgary!
