Calgary Urban Indian Youth (CUIY). - 1965-2002. - 87.5 cm of textual records. - The series consists of files relating to Calgary Urban Indian Youth (CUIY), a social and recreational club for native young people living in Calgary and area. The club was founded by Pat Waite in 1971 with support from the Calgary Indian Friendship Centre, where she was a Board member, and the Alberta Indian Education Centre. During its active period, 1972-1978, the club held weekly meetings with speakers and films, organized recreational sports activities, and sponsored many special projects, outings and cultural events. The CUIY office in the Old Y building was closed in 1982 but Pat Waite continued to use the name for another two decades while offering services to, and representing the interests of, Calgary's urban native population from her home in Riverdale.

Arrangement: Pat Waite appears to have maintained her files in a single running alphabetical order, interfiling files relating to the CUIY with ones on more general topics relating to urban natives and native youth, and ones reflecting her family life and personal interests. Loose material was incorporated into this structure, but three separate alphabetical series were established to reflect the difference in focus of the material. Because of her continuing use of the CUIY name, there is considerable overlap between the files in this series and those in Series 2.

Restricted files: As a well-educated non-native of some stature in the local community, Pat Waite was often called upon to act as an informal social worker, economic advisor or advocate for urban natives experiencing problems or simply seeking advice and support. Files reflecting these activites have been restricted because they contain sensitive personal information about the social and economic situation of her clients. Calgary urban native and native youth activities and organizations of interest to Pat Waite. - 1926-2004; predominant 1960-2004. - 267.5 cm of textual records. - 50 photographs. - 2 audio cassettes. - 1 audio tape : 8 track. - The series consists of material relating to Pat Waite's general interest in issues and conditions affecting Calgary's urban native population. It reflects her active involvement with many local groups, committees, workshops and conferences relating to this area, most notably the Alberta Indian Education Centre, the Calgary Indian Friendship Centre and the Calgary Native Urban Affairs Committee. It also highlights her informal work as an economic advisor and social advocate for local native people and as a cultural educator to the wider Calgary community, particularly through her classroom presentations in Calgary schools. Her commitment in this area was acknowledged in 1987 when she was made Chief of Calgary's urban natives.

Arrangement: Pat Waite's alphabetical file arrangement has been maintained and loose material incorporated into this structure. Because of her continuing use of the CUIY name, there is considerable overlap between the files in this series and those in Series 1.
