Shrapnel-damaged book carried by Tom Tweed on the day he died. -- Inscription inside front cover reads: "France, Aug. 29 - 1918. Souvenir of the Battle 'Before Amiens' Aug 8th 1918. A friend of Mine Capt. T. Tweed (Medicine Hat) was carrying this book. The rips are made by shrapnel from a shell burst. Needless to say he has 'Gone West'. I had him buried where he fell and a little cross erected after the battle was over with this inscription 'Capt. T. Tweed 50th Canadians Killed in Action Aug-10-1918'. Will (W.W. Kennedy). " |
