Calgary Young Women’s Christian Association. -- 1931-1995. -- 44 cm of textual records. -- 1 photograph. -- Doreen Orman was active in the Calgary YWCA from an early date, and was involved in many different committees and activities. She was an inaugural member of the Kappa Gamma Club. Later, she was involved at the administrative level as President, Board member and chair of many committees. She served as President from 1969 to 1973, during which time the National YWCA undertook a review of the Calgary YWCA’s executive. She chaired the Y-Teens Committee, Program Committee, Redevelopment Committee, Women of Distinction Committee, and was active in building campaigns, local arrangements for conventions, and the development of programs for special groups. One of her major contributions was as Chair of the Cooperation for Development Committee, which dealt with YWCA’s programs to aid development in the third world (see Series 2). -- The series consists of Doreen’s papers related to the various Calgary YWCA activities in which she was involved. The files have been artificially arranged in date order, by the earliest date in each file.

Cooperation for Development Committee, YWCA. -- 1969-1992. -- 41 cm of textual records. -- Doreen Orman was extremely active in promoting development in the third world. She served as chair of the YWCA’s Cooperation for Development Committee (CDC) from 1977 to 1979, and then continued to serve on the committee’s executive. The committee was part of the YWCA of Canada, but was decentralized to Calgary. CDC aimed to integrate international development understanding and activities into all aspects of the YWCA’s work. Doreen also attended many workshops and conferences related to this work. -- The series consists of minutes, correspondence, circulars, reports, and newspaper clippings related to the work of the committee, as well as programs and notes of various development conferences which Doreen attended. Doreen represented Calgary Community Support Services for Seniors on the Transition Team that led to the amalgamation. Knox United Church / Knox Centre. -- 1970-1997. -- 9 cm of textual records. -- Doreen Orman became a member of Knox United Church in 1955 or 1956. She served on and chaired several church committees, was Sunday School Superintendent, and chaired the board. In 1992 an adult learning project was set up to offer courses in the Knox Centre. Doreen was a member of the Knox Centre steering committee, and chaired the committee in 1996. -- The series consists primarily of minutes and course descriptions of the Knox Centre Committee. It also includes minutes of the Social Action Committee, programs of services, newsletters, and long-term plans for the church.

She sat on the Television Committee, and helped produce a local television series (called Love) about social issues. -- The series consists of minutes and administrative records of the group, as well as scripts and planning records for the television series.

She subsequently served as the Community Liaison representative and chair of the committee. -- The series consists of minutes and administrative records of the committee.

The society ran the Drug Information Centre. -- The series consists of minutes of board and staff meetings.

John Charles (Jack) Orman. -- 1886-2006, predominant 1925-1986. -- 9 cm of textual records. -- 48 photographs. -- Jack Orman was born in Calgary in 1925, the son of Charles J. Orman and Lilian Evelyn Dunn. He served with the Royal Canadian Navy, 1943-1945, and with the Royal Canadian Navy (Reserve), 1950-1957. After the war, he trained and worked as a newspaper printing pressman. In 1951, he changed careers and became an oil scout and landman, working for a number of petroleum companies over his career, including Pacific Petroleums Ltd., Amurex Oil Development Co., Texaco Canada Ltd., Plymouth Oil Co., and his own companies, Tighthole Scouting International and Petro-Info Ltd. He was actively involved with the Western Canadian Oil Scouts Association, serving twice as president, and served as vice-president of the International Oil Scouts Association. He married Doreen Cumming in 1946 and had two children, Richard Dale (Rick), born in 1948, and Maureen Elaine, born in 1951. He retired in 1982 and died in Calgary in 2006. -- The series consists of miscellaneous personal documents (certificates, diplomas, etc.), material relating to Jack's naval and petroleum careers and photographs. Also includes a file, mainly photographs, relating to Jack's father's family, the Ormans, and his mother's family, the Dunns and Pearsons.
