The Ad Hoc Committee against W5 was formed in Calgary to protest the segment "Campus Giveaway" which was aired on the CTV public affairs program W5 in September 1979. Chinese communities across Canada criticised it for being based on racial stereotyping. CTV eventually issued an apology. In April 1980 the anti-W5 committees from various cities met and formed the Chinese Canadian National Council for Equality. In 1981 it shortened its name to Chinese Canadian National Council (CCNC). The Calgary ad hoc committee became the Calgary Chapter of CCNC. The chapter became inactive by 1989, when its functions were taken over by the United Calgary Chinese Association.
