Series 6 Jim Shewchuk papers. -- 1947-1995. -- 50 cm of textual records. -- Jim Shewchuk, 1918-1997, was born near Eastgate, Alberta and was educated at Eastgate Public School and Ufford High School in Redwater, Alberta. He joined the army about 1943 and served until 1946. Shewchuk started work with Canadian National Railway in 1947 and at the same time became active with the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway, Transport and General Workers, serving his local as President, Vice-President and Secretary over the years of the 1940s to the 1960s. He was a member of the Board of the Edmonton Coop Association for three years and was a founding director of the Edmonton United Appeal. From the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s he was President of the Edmonton and District Labour Council and also served on the board of the Alberta Federation of Labour. In the late 1960s he moved to Calgary to manage the local office of the Canadian Labour Congress. His served on the board of the Calgary Labour Council and the United Way. After his retirement in 1983 Shewchuk continued his work as a labour educator and was active with the Canadian Labour Congress Pensioners and the Alberta Federation of Union Retirees. The Edmonton and District Labour Council and the Edmonton United Way present an annual appreciation award in Jim Shewchuk's name to union members who have contributed to the goals of the United Way.
